ON-SITE DIGITAL SOUND RECORDING

I am available to record school concerts, lectures, meetings and other similar events and occasions.
The final product will be a compact disc (CD) which you can listen to at your leisure.

Advantages to having your event recorded this way:
CDs are portable: listen while you’re driving, at the gym, taking the train to work, etc.
The focus is on sound quality: recordings made with professional sound recording equipment simply sound clearer than recordings made with the consumer-electronics quality microphones usually found on video cameras.
Sound is easier to edit than video: after recording the event, much of the extraneous sound can be removed and/or reduced, such as extensive applause, lengthy pauses, objects being moved, coughs & sneezes, etc. Events can be assigned index numbers so that you can choose which part of the recording you wish to listen to.

Consider having a sound recording professional produce a high-quality CD of your child’s next concert at school, or consider being able to archive an entire lecture series on CD. Perhaps you have an important business meeting coming up, in which critical issues will be discussed or creative ideas brought out. These situations and many more lend themselves to having a professionally-produced sound recording on CD, to listen to at your convenience.

CASSETTE TAPE-TO-CD TRANSFERS

I can transfer your favorite cassette tapes to CD. In the transfer process, I can remove unwanted noises and unnecessary pauses, resulting in a higher-quality recording. I can also add index numbers so that you can choose which part of the recording you wish to listen to.

SOUND LIBRARY
Do you need a specific sound for a video project? If I can find it, I can record it. The final product can be in any of the following file formats: .wav, .mp2, or .mp3.
A few sound samples are included here:

WHY “I LIKE NOISE”

I’ve always been intrigued by the sounds I hear regularly, to the extent that I have an annoying tendency to try to imitate those sounds vocally. For instance many co-workers have heard me ‘singing along’ with a large-scale plotter as it prints out a plan sheet. Also I find that hearing a collection of sounds that stand out in a given environment can transport me mentally to that environment when I’m no longer there. For instance certain bird-calls take me back to summer evenings in the house where I grew up.

During my last semester as a music student, I produced a recording based entirely on individual sounds (including glass being smashed, plucked piano strings and spoken word). (Follow link to hear a portion of Glass.) It has been about 15 years since I produced that recording, and I am finally getting back into recording new material to use in composition of that style. Currently I am looking for volunteers to participate in a couple of spoken-word recordings; follow these links to Bi-Lingual: Help Wanted and/or Misconceptions: Help Wanted.

One good thing about all the time that has passed is that sound recording technology has advanced considerably due to the rapid development of digital media. I can record a bird or a train whistle on-location, directly to a tiny digital data card, and then download the recording files directly to my computer for editing. The digital storage mechanism in my recorder has no moving parts, thus resulting in no tape hiss, and the machine itself doesn’t take up much space or weigh a lot. Once the sounds are in my computer, there are are plenty of options for editing and manipulating them without destroying the original recording.

Some of the sounds listed under Sound Library above will eventually be used in composition, and some were just fun to record because I want to create my own library of sound effects. You never know when you might need a good recording of a hydraulic rock hammer.
